About the Students, Project, & Impact: "I teach in a predominantly white school where most students are in the middle and upper class. We have been striving recently to bring diverse perspectives and experiences to the attention of our students. Last year, we started a Student Diversity and Equity Council as well as one for teachers. Additionally, our librarian sponsored a "Read Woke" program, which encouraged students to read books written by and about people of color. One thing I do in my own classroom to further this goal is to participate in a Global Reading Project with schools in Japan, England, France, and Vietnam. My students are afforded the opportunity to work with students in these four countries as they read one of the literature circle selections that highlight experiences of refugees from a variety of countries. In the past, we have included the following titles: I Am Malala, I Will Always Write Back, Enrique's Journey, and When Broken Glass Floats. This year, we are looking to diversify even further and add North Korean and South African stories as future options."
